Low Carb: Where to begin…

I get a lot of questions about my diet and way of eating. Usually people are just curious about how eating a high-fat ketogenic diet can be healthy – especially when they see me pile butter on top of my steak. I always encourage people to do their own homework and understand the “why” before they consider changing their way of eating. There are many, many resources out there – books, videos, blogs, articles, scientific studies, podcasts, and personal opinions. So let’s start with a few facts:

  1. Eating a ketogenic diet changes the body’s primary source of energy from glucose to fat.
  2. Carbohydrates are not necessary for energy. You heard that right…there is NO dietary requirement for carbohydrates!
  3. Insulin is what makes you fat.
  4. Calories don’t matter, AND..a calorie is NOT a calorie.
  5. Low-fat diets do NOT reduce your risk of heart disease.
  6. Diabetes (Type 2) is reversible!

Do the above statements surprise you? Of course we have been told for years that we should eat a low-fat diet. Would it surprise you to hear that those recommendations were not based on any scientific evidence? Look at the graph below. Despite clear and growing evidence that a low-fat diet doesn’t work, and in fact may be quite harmful, it continues to be recommended.

Have I piqued your interest? Want to learn more? What I am telling you I didn’t learn in medical school. I did my own research and I want you to do the same. Until you understand the “why” of how this way of eating works, you will not be successful. Below I list the resources that are accurate, reliable, and easy to understand.

I could go on and on. I have been following this way of eating for over 5 years and have completed 4 marathons in ketosis, never needing to “fuel” with carbohydrates during a race. Despite being overweight for most of my life, I no longer struggle to maintain a healthy weight. It can be done, you can live without carbohydrates, and you can enjoy food as we were meant to eat it!
